BOKO HARAM HITS MAIDUGURI, YOLA, 55 KILLED, 100+ INJURED

BokoHaram, yesterday  let loose  its suicide bombers  on worshippers  in Maiduguri and Yola, leaving at least 55 people dead  in both attacks.

Twenty-eight  worshippers were feared killed during the  Fajr (early morning prayer)  in a mosque at  Jiddari Polo area of  the Borno State capital. Time was 5 am.

Umar Sani, a civilian vigilante assisting the military in the counter-insurgency, and local resident Musa Sheriff both told AFP there were two blasts at the mosque.

“I was involved in the evacuation. We counted 28 dead bodies apart from the two bombers, who were identifiable by the mutilation of their bodies,” said Sani.“Over 20 other people were injured.”

Abdulkadir Ibrahim, spokesman  for  the National Relief Agency, put the death toll at six.He said 17 others were injured.

Hospital sources put the death toll at 19.

A  member of the local vigilance group  who took part in the evacuation of the dead said  there appeared to be only one suicide bomber though “we all heard two explosions.”

Sani and Sheriff said two other people were arrested and handed over to the military for questioning after they were seen apparently celebrating following the blasts.

The two men were “standing from afar, hugging each other like a celebration, chanting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest)”, said Sani.

“To them it was a mission accomplished,” added Sheriff.

Nine hours later , another  suicide bomber detonated  an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at  the Jambutu Hajj camp mosque in Yola soon after the Imam finished his sermon.

State Police Commissioner  Gabriel Adaji said eight worshippers were killed.

Other sources put the death toll  at 27.

One volunteer at the scene, who helped in the rescue effort but asked not to be identified, said: “This mosque is newly  built and this was the first Jumat in it.“While worshippers had risen for the prayers to start after the sermon by the imam, there was a huge blast in the premises.”

NEMA’s coordinator in the Adamawa state capital, Sa’ad Bello said  116 people were being treated for injuries at two hospitals in the city.

SUICIDE BOMBING IN BORNO, 10 DEAD, 11 WOUNDED

At least 10 people were killed and 11 wounded in Friday’s suicide attack at a mosque in Borno State.

A suicide bombing during dawn prayers at a mosque in Maiduguri killed at least 10 people, a hospital source told Reuters.

Abdulkadir Ibrahim, spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), put the death toll at six.

Another hospital source said 11 people had been wounded.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Ibrahim blamed the Boko Haram sect, which has been trying to carve out a state in the northeast of Nigeria since 2009.

30 BOKO HARAM MENBERS KILLED IN YOLA

No fewer than 30 members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect were killed in a gun duel with Nigerian troops assisted by the local vigilantes in the early hours of yesterday at the border villages between Adamawa and Borno states.

This came as Boko Haram members on Sunday invaded Gwoza local government area of Borno State, killing nine people and destroying houses.

On the Adamaa incident, Nigerian troops had laid an ambush on the insurgents between the border villages of Kirchinga and Imirsa, which had come under attacks of Boko Haram insurgents in recent times, leading to the death of innocent residents.

A local vigilante operative who participated in the campaign, told Vanguard that following intelligence report about the movement of the Boko Haram insurgents, an ambush was laid for them which resulted in the killing of many of the insurgents.

“Following information about the movements of the Boko Haram insurgents we got, we decided to lay an ambush in the wee hours of Monday.
“Our efforts yielded results as we succeeded in killing over 30 of the insurgents after a fierce gun duel.
“We confiscated many weapons from the invading terrorists, including AK 47 assault rifles, bows and arrows and other dangerous weapons,” the source said.

The onslaught against the insurgents followed increased attacks on parts of Madagali local government area, leading to the death of three soldiers and abduction of one senior military officer alongside his operational vehicle.

A vigilante operative had told Vanguard that Boko Haram insurgents had disguised as local vigilante operatives and in the process, killed unsuspecting residents and soldiers.

“The insurgents who disguised as local vigilante mounted road blocks across the highway and pretended to be carrying out routine checks.
“The soldiers were lured into the booby trap of the insurgents who immediately swooped on them and killed three soldiers and abducted one of the soldiers,” the source said.

In a similar vein, reports from Kirchinga village in Madagali local government area of Adamawa State indicated that a fierce gun duel was taking place between Nigerian troops and Boko Haram insurgents who launched attack on the village weekend.

Confirming the incident, member representing Madagali/Michika Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Adamu Kamale, called on the federal government to deploy more troops to safeguard lives and properties.

Meanwhile, suspected group of Boko Haram sect on Sunday invaded Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, killing nine persons and destroying houses.

Sources said, however, that scores of the insurgents met their Waterloo as military operatives in Gwoza town repelled the attack much later.

The terrorists, according to another source, also wounded many people after looting their foodstuff, including livestock, and fled without confrontation from the armless villagers.

Sunday is a market day where a few persons from surrounding villages of Limankara and other communities patronize the town for businesses.

Gwoza was declared as an Islamic Caliphate by the group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau last year when his fighters seized the town which is south and about 150kms drive from Maiduguri, the state capital.

After the deadly attacks and taken over of Gwoza by the terrorists last year, including Limankara village, no fewer than 40 policemen undergoing training at the Limankara Mobile Training Camp were declared missing.

A few of them were reported to have been located and rescued, with over 30 still missing at the time of this report.

Reliable sources told Vanguard that with the liberation of Gwoza by military troops early this year, many fleeing residents returned to the town and other surrounding villages to pick up their pieces, before another group of terrorists launched fresh attacks on the town, killing nine and injuring scores.

The source added that just last week, there was a failed attempt by insurgents on Gwoza town, but they were repelled by the military, living unspecified number of the terrorists dead and recovery of their arms and ammunition.

A source said he was on his way to Gwoza with a truck of cement and other building materials for sale, following relative peace witnessed recently in the town, but had no option than to spent the night at Limankara before moving back to Madagali town of Adamawa.

On the recent attacks on Gwoza, THE source who was on his way to Gwoza from Maiduguri at the time of the attack had to spend the night at Limankara, stating that he was compelled to do so because the military had blocked the only existing Madagali- Limankaa- Gwoza road.

All effort to get confirmation from the Police Commissioner, Mr. Aderemi Opadokun did not yield positive result as his phone lines were not reachable at press time.

UN HAILS PRESIDENT BUHARI FOR HIS FIGHT AGAINST BOKO HARAM

The United Nations (UN) has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari administration for its fight against Boko Haram.

Mr. Weixiong Chen of the UN Counter Terrorism Centre said this when he led a delegation to Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS’) Controller-General, Dr. Peter Ekpendu.

Chen praised the government and the NPS management for being able to contain insurgency, particularly the de-radicalisation of those in prison custody.

NPS spokesman Francis Enobore  quoted the leader of the delegation as noting with delight the “appreciable success that has been recorded in the counter-terrorism, reformation and rehabilitation drive of the prisons service through the support of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), European Union and other development partners”.

He stated that violent extremism, which he described as a relatively new phenomenon in Africa, remained a global challenge and a common enemy to mankind.

The UN official said insurgency must be collectively fought with unwavering determination and relentless vigour.

Chen observed that Nigeria, being the first country in Africa to adopt the soft approach to managing terrorism through good penal practice, has once again demonstrated its capacity to taking a leading role in strengthening the resources of other sister nations in the continent in dealing with the menace.

He promised to seek the support of international donor agencies for logistics, infrastructural intervention and capacity-building for prison workers to enhance and sustain the gains so far recorded.

The NPS’ Controller-General thanked the visitors for the  interest in assisting Nigeria to surmount the challenge of violent extremism, which has redefined the country’s security architecture and socio-economic development.

He lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for the logistics support through the ONSA that led to a huge impact in the de-radicalisation  programme for those  in prison custody

BOKO HARAM REGROUPING: MILITARY TIGHTENED SECURITY AROUND LAGOS

The military and other security agencies have increased surveillance around critical infrastructures in Lagos.

This move, it was learnt was as a result of the infiltration of some Boko Haram commanders and elements into Lagos and other southern states.

The military, placed boko haram ion the run -CLICK HERE FOR FULL STORY- in the Northeast theatre zone,and  many of the fleeing terrorists, according to security agencies have infiltrated the southern parts of the country where they are said to be regrouping.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai hinted on the infiltration at the weekend in Lagos, while addressing troops of the Nine Brigade.

He called on his personnel to collaborate with other security agencies, whom he disclosed have already arrested a handful of the terrorists.

He said all vehicles going in and out of the various ports, as well as other critical government infrastructures are being thoroughly searched because Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) could be hidden in anyone.

But a security source who does not want to be named told said that security has been tightened around the ports to forestall an attack.

The source stated that even tankers and trailers entering the Apapa and Tin Can ports are being thoroughly searched because the military does not want unpleasant surprises.

“IEDs could be hidden in anything or any car, so there is nothing wrong with security being ready. People should consider the catastrophe should any bomb explodes around the ports.“The damage that would be done to lives and properties cannot be innumerate.  Aside that, foreign ships will not want to berth in Lagos again, resulting to serious economic loss.“It is in the interest of all that a combined team of military and civil security agents are work in tirelessly to avoid any unpleasant surprise in Lagos.“We are aware the terrorists have infiltrated and that is why we are acting ahead of them, beefing up intelligence and clearing all areas that they could hide without raising suspicion,” he said.

Meanwhile it was  also gathered that the newly introduced Treasury Single Account (TSA) has been affecting the military and other security agencies adversely.

It was learnt that even the ongoing joint operations being carried out at Ikorodu, which started over the weekend, was being impeded by logistics.

Security sources who lamented the difficulties they were experiencing, wondered why the federal government included them in the TSA, since they do not generate revenue.

A very senior security officer who spoke in confidence said that the President should understand that security operations are usually spontaneous, adding that no one could estimate the amount that will be required.

He disclosed that nearly all security agencies have been crippled by the TSA, adding that providing welfare for foot soldiers in the Ikorodu operation has not been easy.

Another source who hinted that both air and land patrols have been conducted with military crafts, boats, wondered how effective it would be for security agencies to have to apply to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), before fuelling operational vehicles to pursue criminals.

He said: “This TSA has almost crippled our operations. Security agencies should have been exempted from it since we are not money generating. It is very difficult to keep men and material intact in an operation without enough resources.“There are certain emergency situations that require spontaneous action. But with this TSA, one has to apply to the CBN, which may not understand the importance of urgency.“I just hope that the President, who also has security background, will understand that it cannot work in our situation.“We are not a money generating sector, at least, not yet, so, they should weigh the options and consider that which is most suitable especially at this critical time.

38 KILLED, 51 WOUNDED IN CHAD'S MULTIPLE BOMBINGS

Thirty-eight people, including five attackers, were killed and another 51 wounded yesterday in multiple suicide bombings that targeted a market and refugee camp in Chad.

The attacks took place in Baga Sola village near the Nigerian border, with the terror sect Boko Haram suspected as the brain behind the insurgency.

The head of the gendarmerie in the capital N’djamena said two groups of suicide bombers attacked the market and refugee camp.

Gen. Banyaman Cossingar, director general of the gendarmerie, said a group of women blew themselves at the market, killing at least 16 people while a second group of suicide bombers went to the refugee camp, killing at least 22 people.

Col. Azem Agouna Bermandoua, spokesman for the military, said there was a triple bombing in the village. He said they suspected Boko Haram.

Niger, Cameroon and Chad have all suffered a spillover of violence from Boko Haram’s north Nigerian strongholds.

Chad spearheaded a regional offensive earlier this year that drove the Islamist fighters from many of their bases. However, the group has fought back, launching a wave of cross-border attacks and suicide bombings.

“We heard three explosions. The market is on fire right now,” said one of the security sources.

Niger, Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon and Chad have agreed to establish an 8,700-strong multinational force to take on the militants, though its formation has been delayed.

Chadian President Idriss Deby has said the force could begin operations later this month.

1 CHIBOK GIRL EXCAPE BOKO HARAM CAMP, NARRATES EXPERIENCE

There were indications weekend that many of the 200 girls of the Government Secondary School, Chibok abducted in April 2014, are alive and holed up in the Lake Chad region of the North-East epicentre of the battle to dislodge Boko Haram terrorists from Nigeria.

Sources disclosed to Saturday Vanguardthat the girls who were relocated from the initial Sambisa Camps of the terrorists, following unrelenting bombardments by air and land operations, have been relocated to Lake Chad area with some of the girls spread along border communities.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that about two weeks ago, one of the abducted girls who was formerly kept in a Sambisa forest camp, escaped from the hands of the abductors and ran into the hands of some Fulani herdsmen. It was the Fulani herdsmen having confirmed that the girl was a Chibok girl, who assisted her to get to the Baga military base of the multi-national Joint Task Force.

At the Baga base, the escapee girl was said to have confessed that many of them were forcefully married to the terrorists who not only impregnated them but infected some of them with different diseases. On her part, she was not only impregnated, but she got the VVF disease from one of the terrorists.

According to the escapee, at the camp where she escaped from there were about 60 of the girls while others were shared and moved to border communities. Narrating more tales of woes on what the Chibok girls went through and are still going through in the hands of the terrorists, the source said though the Chibok girl had just put to bed, the VVF (Vesicant Virginal Fistula) disease with which she was infected by the terrorist had made her uncomfortable hence her decision to flee to seek for medical help, as she was repeatedly passing solid waste uncontrollably.

Continuing, the source said, “When the Fulani herdsman saw the girl in the bush and questioned her about her mission, she narrated her experience, which made the herdsman to take her to the soldiers in that area. With her escape, there are now 59 of the girls left in her camp.”

Emphasizing that almost all of the girls have been married out to the Boko Harram terrorists while quite a number of them have delivered babies, the escapee told security agencies that the girls were always moved from place to place in the Sambisa forest during the bombardments but that when the heat was too much, they were all moved out of the forest.

The escapee further disclosed to security agencies that Boko Haram terrorists have been seriously weakened and are now moving from place to place aimlessly like lost sheep, planting mines and IEDs (improvised explosive devices) which some security forces have mistakenly fallen prey to.

“All of us were forced to become Muslims but kept in camps far from each other”, she revealed. “You can only see and recognize those in your camp as any of us who refused being Islamized was either beheaded or shot at point blank range.”

She revealed further that the camps where the Chibok girls are now kept are in Kangoora, Mallam Fatori, Damasak, Tunbun Kaka and Tumbum Gira. Many of these towns are located in the border communities around Lake Chad with some in Nigeria and others in Chad.

BOKO HARAM KILLS 18 PEOPLE IN YOBE

Boko Haram struck again yesterday in Yobe State capital Damaturu, killing no fewer than 18 people in multiple attacks.

But troops killed about 100 fleeing sect fighters at Goniri, also in the state.

Yobe police spokesman Toyin Gbadegesin said the Damaturu attack also left eight people injured.

He said: “What happened this morning was caused by three suicide bombers who detonated their devices at three different places.

“There were two suicide attacks in different places at Buhari Estate while the third one took place at a Fulani settlement behind Zanna Zakariya Housing Estate –  all in Damaturu.

“The first blast at the Fulani settlement killed 11 people while the two others at Buhari Estate killed six people (four at the shopping centre and two near a community mosque) and one at the hospital.”

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency management Agency (SEMA), Musa Idi Jidawa, said the attack was carried out by some teenagers in three places.

“I can confirm to you that so far, we got 18 people that have been confirmed dead. The number of injured persons is 10,” he said.

The army said troops of the 120 Task Force Battalion in Yobe killed more than 100 fleeing terrorists at Goniri. The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col Sani Usman, in a statement, said seven soldiers died while nine others were injured  when the terrorists attempted to invade the military base at Goniri early yesterday.

“The fleeing Boko Haram terrorists, in a desperation and to create an impression that they remain relevant, early today made a futile attempt on 120 Task Force Battalion troops at Goniri, Yobe State.

“During the encounter, our gallant troops successfully repelled the attack and inflicted heavy casualty on the invaders, as all of them were killed.

“More than 100 terrorists died but unfortunately however, seven of our gallant soldiers paid the supreme price while defending our father land. One officer and eight soldiers were also wounded.’’

According to the statement, the troops recovered arms, ammunition and other equipment from the terrorists.

The arms and ammunition recovered include, one general purpose machine gun; two rocket propelled grenades, nine AK-47 rifles and belted rounds of 7.62 (NATO) ammunition.

Wires used for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), seven Primed IEDs, various types of spanners and a torch light were also recovered.

The statement said the troops had consolidated on the encounter and would continue blocking any fleeing terrorist using the Nigerian Air Force aerial bombardment and other troops artillery fire.

The statement stated that troops of 21 Brigade on fighting patrol from Bama to Ngurosoye destroyed Boko Haram terrorists’ camps along that axis.

It stated that soldiers on patrol came across some of the terrorists’ hideouts that also served as fabricating area for IEDs and the terrorists’ training area along Bama-Kawuri axis.

The statement said the army with the support of the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies would not relent in the determined effort of defeating Boko Haram insurgents.

BOKO HARAM REALISES NEW VIDEO REAFFIRMS ALLEGIANCE TO ISIS

Boko Haram militants have released a new video in which they pledged allegiance to Islamic State and its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. An unidentified member of the group who spoke in both Arabic and heavily accented Hausa, said that Boko Haram, also known as IS West Africa Province, was still under the leadership of Abubakar Shekau, who hasn't appeared in a video since February.

3 SUSPECTED BOKO HARAM MEMBERS KILLED BY THEIR OWN BOMB

Three suspected members of Boko Haram died after a bomb they were transporting exploded in Diffa region in Niger republic. Local sources say the bomb exploded when the terrorists were about to enter Bosso town where they had planned to carry out an attack.

A Bomb explosion that would have taken the life of many Nigerians was averted by a security guard on sunday in pleatue state. The ECWA church which was filled with Worshiers had a bomb planted at the Entrance. The guard spoted, picked up and threw the bomb which exploded instantly.Although  no one was killed from the explosion, the guard sustained injuries on the leg and is currently being treated, a worshipper said.
     Another explosive device that was planted in the rest room of the church was discorverd by the  police anti bomb squard said another witness.
   The ECWA church in tudunwa is located near the federal secetariat in jos, jos north local goverment area of plateau state.
   Meanwile the police spokesman in pleatue, Abuh Emmanuel  confermed that no life was lost in the explosion  and that expersts were deployed to the scene To ascertain those who planted the explosive device, and possibly the manufacturers.
   This explosion occured just only after 1 week  after a similar explosion At a redeemed church in Yobe state, which unfortunately clamed many lives.
