5 DEAD AS BUS PLUNGES INTO OJI RIVER

Five persons lost their lives early Thursday morning on the Onitsha-Enugu express way, as a commuter bus heading towards Enugu plunged into Oji River, near Anambra.
Mr. Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra Command, who confirmed the accident told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the incident occurred about 1:25 a.m. on Thursday.
Ajayi said there were 15 passengers in the vehicle, out of which 10 were rescued and taken to hospital, while five were killed in the incident.
He said the timely rescue operations led by the personnel of the FRSC minimised the number of casualties.
“The rescue at Oji River is still going on, we have been able to rescue 10 people alive and taken them to hospital, five were confirmed dead and the bus has been recovered,” he said.
The commander said it was a ‘lone accident’ and blamed it on drowsiness of the driver, poor visibility and other dangers associated with night driving.
He urged people who wished to travel to do so during the day time, and set out on time for journey that may stretch into the night.

MAN JAILED FOR DEFRAUDING 2 COMMISSIONERS OF POLICE

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, has sentenced one Mohammed Isah to two years’ imprisonment for defraudinsg the Anambra and Ondo states Commissioners of Police of N154,000.
While the Anambra CP was duped of N150,000, his counterpart in Ondo State was swindled of N4,000.
The court held that Isah was guilty of the offence and handed him the sentence without option of fine. The convict was said to have operated in Anambra, Ondo and Lagos states between June and December 7, 2015, before he was arrested by the police in Lagos.
The Katsina-born convict had gone to the Lagos State Police Command’s X-Squad Department in Ikeja to complain that some policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad collected N188, 200 from him.
A police officer, ACP Edward Ajogun, who had served in the Ondo Police Command before he was transferred to Lagos in September, reportedly met him making the complaint.
It was learnt that Ajogun had witnessed a similar scenario of the convict framing some policemen in Ondo with the sole aim of getting compensated.
Isah, who was immediately arrested, had reportedly implicated policemen in Ondo and Anambra states by taking the number plates of their patrol vehicles to the state police headquarters on the claims that they extorted money from him.
It was said that the Anambra Commissioner of Police had paid him N150,000 after he alleged that the cops from the command swindled him of N270,000.
ISAH

Isah, who had used a pseudonym, Musa Mulamba, also accused a team of six policemen on patrol in Akure, Ondo State, of extorting N140, 000 from him. But the state CP gave him N4, 000 for reporting the matter to the command.
IT was learnt that the allegation led to the dismissal of the six cops.
Isah had on December 12 pleaded guilty to the three counts bordering on fraud when he was arraigned before the court’s Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Olayinka.
The charges read in part, “That you, Mohammed Isah, between June 2015 and December 2015, did falsely accuse the patrol team police officers of Anambra, Ondo and Lagos states commands of extorting the sum of N270, 000, N140, 000 and N188, 200, from you respectively, thereby committing an offence punishable under sections 93, 95, 96 (a) (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
“That you did fraudulently obtain the sum of N150,000 and N4,000 from the Anambra and Ondo states CPs respectively, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 312 (a) (b) (2) and (3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The magistrate consequently sentenced him to two years in prison for each of the three counts, adding that the jail terms would run concurrently without option of fine.

MUSLIM MAN DETAINED FOR CHOKING JEWISH PASSENGER ON ETHIOPIAN AIRLINE

A Muslim man has been detained for choking a Jewish passenger on a flight to Ethiopia and urging others to lynch him after discovering the man was Israeli. The Sudanese attacker realised he was seated behind the Jewish passenger about 30 minutes before the Ethiopian Airlines flight landed in Addis Ababa, on Thursday last week.

He then allegedly lashed out at him - striking him with a metal food tray and screaming 'Allah Akbar' and 'slaughter the Jew'.

The victim, named as 54-year-old Arik, told Ynet: 'He hit me over the head with a metal tray and shouted "Allah akbar" and "I will slaughter the Jew. Only after a few seconds, just before I was about to lose consciousness, did I manage to call out and a flight attendant who saw what was happening summoned her colleagues.'

Aside from the staff on board the Chad to Ethiopia flight, the only other person who came to his aid was a Lebanese passenger.

He said once they overpowered the attacker, Arik was sheltered at the rear of the plane while his attacker was guarded.

However, he said his Sudanese Muslim attacker even tried to convince the rest of the passengers to help 'finish him off'.

According to Haaretz, an Ethiopian Airlines spokesperson said the attacker showed no signs of violence when boarding the flight in Chad.

'He didn't only attack the Israeli passenger, but other passengers and crew members as well.

KIDNAPPER ARRESTED IN IMO STATE WHILE WITHDRAWING RANSOM MONEY

The Imo State Police arrested Nwabueze Nicholas Lucky on charges of kidnapping and extortion after he abducted 2-year-old Somtochukwu Olewu on October 27, at his mother's shop located at Zone 4, World Bank Area, New Owerri, Imo State.

Nwabueze had gone to buy something but when he got to the shop, he saw the little boy playing alone outside while his mother was busy inside the shop and he quickly kidnapped him.
He demanded a ransom of N500,000 which was paid the next day. He however kept the boy in his custody, hoping to release him immediately after cashing the money. He succeeded in withdrawing only N120,000 through the ATM machine. When the ATM machine didn’t dispense the rest of the money, he was forced to go inside the bank to make a complaint. He was immediately nabbed by the police.

Confirming the arrest, the state command Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Andrew Enwerem said the arrest was made by the operatives of the Anti-kidnapping squad of the command following a tip-off.

"Following a tip-off, the operatives of anti-kidnapping unit of the Command moved into action. That movement produced a positive report, hence the suspect, Lucky Nwabueze, who has confessed to the crime was arrested while the poor boy, Somtochukwu was rescued. The suspect has been helping the police with useful information," Enwerem said.

The suspect confessed to have kidnapped the boy because the boy's father resides in China.
"I was going to that Zone 4 in the World Bank Area in search of job. Whenever, I felt like eating something, I would go to the boy’s mother shop. Fortunately, on that day, October 27, 2015, the mother of the boy was inside the shop and the boy was coming out of their compound alone. When I did not see anybody, I took the boy away and joined the next commercial tricycle (keke) to the park, where I boarded a bus to Mbaise. I kept the boy in my custody for two days and called his mother, whose number I had before." he stated
"A day after I abducted the boy, I received an alert of N500, 000 in my account. Hoping to release him immediately I cash the money, I went to my bank with my ATM card. I collected N120, 000 first. After that day, the ATM failed to pay. I went inside the bank to ask why. It was then I was arrested by the police," Nwabueze added.

The victim' mother, Mrs. Olewu Ifeoma, an undergraduate revealed that suspect usually comes to her shop to patronise her but that she never knew he had an ulterior motive.

"I am very grateful to the police. I must sincerely thank the Imo State Commissioner of Police and his men, who rescued my boy," the grateful mother said. "In all, may God Almighty be glorified and may the Lord reward them abundantly,"

THE VERDICT IS BIZARRE- PDP

PDP has described as unacceptable and bizarre the election tribunal verdicts in both Rivers and Akwa Ibom state. The Akwa Ibom state election petition tribunal few days ago had nullified the state governorship election in 18 Local governments and ordered a rerun. PDP's reaction is contained in a statement released this afternoon by its National Publicity secretary Olisa Metuh. Read below

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declares the verdict of the River state governorship election tribunal sitting in Abuja, which showed clear bias against Governor Nyesom Wike and the PDP, as completely bizarre, unacceptable and part of the script by the APC to manipulate the will of the people.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Saturday said indications to this spurious judgment had months ago been hinted to the PDP, which in turn, alerted the nation and the international community of the heinous plot by the APC government, to use the judiciary and various security agencies to reverse the victory of the PDP in Rivers, Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Taraba and Abia states.
“We invite Nigerians and the international community to recall various reprehensible steps taken by the APC government that culminated in this ruling as well as the ridiculous Wednesday’sverdict of the Akwa-Ibom state governorship election tribunal, also sitting in Abuja.
1. The curious and controversial relocation of the elections tribunals from their states to Abuja without any justification.
2. The constant juggling of judicial officers and members of governorship elections tribunal in PDP states, especially, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states.
3. Constant harassment of judicial and electoral officers involved in the governorship election cases in these state, using agencies of government, particularly, the Directorate of State Services (DSS) under the direct command of a known APC member, Alhaji Lawal Daura.
4. Constant threats, intimidation and coercing of witnesses against the PDP in the tribunals.
5. The recent mass transfer of security operatives, especially the DSS and police personnel that actually participated in the conduct of the elections in Rivers and Akwa-Ibom, ostensibly to frustrate the course of genuine evidences in the process.
“The bias in the judgment against the PDP in Rivers as well as Akwa-Ibom is evidenced in the contradictions inherent in the trial process of the two cases and the verdicts therein, whereby the tribunals clearly disregarded standing legal norm that a petitioner must establish prove of claims.
“Also curious is the fact that after both the petitioner and respondent agreed before the tribunal that both card reader and manual accreditations were used for the election, the tribunal still went ahead to base its decision on issues of card reader.
While it is convenient to them to use legal technicalities to deny PDP victory in Imo, Lagos, Ogun and Yobe states, the same rules are misapplied to wickedly favour APC petitioners in Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states.
“It is therefore evinced that these contradictions are direct fall-out of compromises as well as boasts by the APC of being in direct and remote control of the tribunals. If not, how can one explain the fact that while governorship elections are being upturned in PDP states, in APC states, where similar claims and facts are in contention, elections are being upheld.
“Further proof of bias by the Rivers tribunal is the fact that less than 24 hours after various counsels submitted nine written addresses and documents, the tribunal rushed its notice of judgment, an action ostensibly aimed at ambushing the pending Supreme Court action on the issue of jurisdiction regarding the relocation of the tribunal outside River state, which was due to be delivered on Tuesday.
“This is not withstanding the fact that the tribunal has up to seven days after of receipt of addresses, to deliver its judgment, but chose instead, to rush to deliver this spurious verdict even on a Saturday, a development eliciting suspicion that the judgment may have since been predetermined and written even before the commencement of the case.
“The PDP calls on all Nigerians and the international community to note this growing manipulation of the judiciary by the APC government, a factor which portends great danger to our democracy and the stability of our country.
“Nigerians would want to recall that under the PDP-led government with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s commitment to the tenets of democracy as encapsulated in the safeguard of ‘one man one vote’ and the independence of the judiciary, the PDP conceded electoral defeat in Edo, Anambra, and Imo states without attempting to collect victory through executive manipulation of the judicial process.
“The PDP restates unequivocally that this judgments must not stand in view of the prevailing inherent contradictions, in addition to the huge threat they portend to our democracy and national stability.
“Finally, the PDP charges all lovers of democracy, particularly our members in Rivers and Akwa-Ibom state not to be daunted, as these judgments will not stand the test of the law and the will of the people. We therefore reassure that the PDP will do all within the ambit of the law to resist this criminal attempt by the APC to steal and thwart the will of the people.

Chief Olisa Metuh

NIGERIA TO REDUCE FUEL PUMP PRICE, SAYS OSINBAJO

Nigeria's Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has revealed that the government is working on a medium-term reduction of the pump price of petroleum products.
According to him, the Muhammadu Buhari administration is working on ensuring that private refineries work, while reducing importation of refined petroleum.
“We are unbundling the NNPC so that its various components are effective core centres and are able to do their business well,” he told Bloomberg in an interview.
He said the government was going to reduce the role of the NNPC to its main objective of regulating the sector and ensure a reduction of pump price of petroleum products.
“We are going to have private refineries at the site of the old refineries, so they can benefit from the available infrastructure.
“We think that in the medium term, we would be able to get cheaper pump price, pump price of oil would be cheaper because we would be importing far less fine petroleum. A lot of that would be produced locally.
“Now, we have well over 30 modular refineries, so we think a lot of modular refineries would come. Many of them, their major concern is feed stock, are we going to be guaranteed feed stock?
“We are working on that. Once we are able to deal with that, we think that we would be able to reduce pump price and get the whole business of importation of refined petroleum and the NNPC getting directly involved; we are going to reduce that.
“The ultimate objective of course is to have NNPC regulatory, playing a more regulatory function as the private sector takes most of the downstream.”
